Nikki Blonsky is an American-born singer and actress. At the age of 17, Nikki was cast in the breakthrough role of Tracy Turnblad, in the film Hairspray.

Youth and early experience

Nikki Blonsky was born on November 9, 1988 in Great Neck, New York. Her interest in acting blossomed when she joined the Great Neck South Senior High School theater program, where she was cast in such productions as Carmen, Sweeney Todd and Les Misérables. As a present for her 15th birthday, Nikki was taken to a Broadway production of Hairspray, and after seeing the show wanted to play the role of Tracy Turnblad. Auditioning for the same Broadway show at a later date later, Nikki was turned down for the part due to her young age.

Later career

Undeterred by her previous rejection, Nikki auditioned for the role of Tracy Turnblad in the major motion picture release of Hairspray; the film was a financial success, holding the record box office opening for a musical for over a year after its release.

Additional appearances

Nikki Blonsky continues to act in film, having appeared in Queen Sized, Harold and Waiting for Forever. Aside from movies, Nikki has also branched into television work with a guest role on Ugly Betty, and as a recurring regular series performer in both Huge and Valemort.

Awards

Nikki Blonsky won the award for Best New Actress at the Critic's Choice Awards, and shared a win for Best Ensemble Cast with her fellow cast for Hairspray.
